Q6 Explains Long Term Evolution, LTE

LTE is the next step in providing a complete data service to our mobile devices (such as PDAs) that will provide a comparable experience to the one that we experience while in the office. It will provide data rates of 100Mbps to a mobile device which is far in excess of the capabilities of the current UMTS and GPRS services.

  • Users will expect more - will they be able to watch good quality TV and experience on-line gaming?
  • Service providers will expect more - will network operators be able to service the requirements of content providers and the demands of users?

Q6 presents two courses to cut through the Hype and to explain the technologies behind the "talk":

  • Introduction to LTE - 1 day. This overview course describes the motivations, timescales and goals of LTE as well as identifying the technical features of UMTS that will change to support LTE.
The orientation of the course is such that it is suited to both non-specialists and technical radio-oriented planners, architects, etc

  • Beyond UMTS - Long Term Evolution (LTE) in Depth - 3 days. This in-depth course covers all aspects of LTE, from the environment and forces shaping it, the physical changes involving MIMO antennas and the move from CDMA to OFDM, through the logical air interface channels to the necessary architectural and core network changes. Some specific aspects such as security and handover to non-3GPP technologies are included

Both of these courses consider the co-existence (or otherwise) of LTE and WiMAX. This subject is a common concern and is given a full discussion session within both courses.
